MICHAEL AWORI IS APPOINTED AS TDB COO

Nairobi, 1 September 2019 – Mr. Michael Awori has been appointed as the TDB Chief Operating Officer effective on the 1st September 2019, after having successfully served as TDB’s Lending Operations Executive since 2017.

Mr. Awori is a seasoned international banker with over 20 years’ experience in development finance, investment banking, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions and also leveraged finance. His track record in international banking includes the execution of over US$ 20 billion in financing, capital markets and M&A transactions, in Africa, and globally.

Since he joined, Mr. Awori successfully led the consolidation of TDB’s primary product houses – Trade Finance and Project & Infrastructure Finance, as well as the Syndications and Co-Financing Departments – into one unified and aligned Operations Complex. Bringing under one roof the design, structuring and execution of innovative and impactful solutions has enabled the Bank to improve its effectiveness in addressing clients’ needs

In addition to establishing and managing TDB’s large Operations Complex, Mr. Awori has worked to pave the way for significant technological innovation in the Bank’s operations, and has also been responsible for product strategy development and execution, business development and the management of strategic multi-country client relationships. As such, he also oversees the Bank’s coverage operations across TDB’s six regional offices. Under his leadership of lending operations, TDB’s loan book grew by over 20%.

In his new capacity as TDB COO, Mr. Awori will be working closely with the President and CEO and the Executive Committee in the execution of the Bank’s overall vision and mission.

Mr. Awori joined TDB from Barclays, where he was recruited to establish the bank’s debt finance business in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania – generating 30%+ revenue growth and 70%+ asset growth in 2 years. He began his banking career in bulge-bracket investment banking and corporate banking in Chicago, first with JPMorgan and then Citigroup. He spent over a decade with these institutions, advising clients on corporate finance and mergers & acquisitions, completing several notable transactions including cross-border M&A and capital market financings, before returning to Africa.

A member of the Mauritius Institute of Directors and Kenya Institute of Directors, Mr. Awori also serves on the Board of Directors of Cable & Wireless, Seychelles’ leading ‘quad-play’ telecom company and the Board Investment Committee of Eastern and Southern African Trade Fund (ESATF), a trade fund jointly owned by TDB and GML Capital, which covers all of TDB’s Member States.

 

Michael holds a Master of Business Administration in Economics, Finance & International Business from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business and is

an economics graduate from Goshen College. Among other studies, he has also received, advanced management training at the London Business School.
